No Fireworks Are Safe, Even the Innocent Sparkler Causes Thousands of Eye Injuries. American Academy of Ophthalmology wants people to know the facts about fireworks so everyone has a fun and safe Fourth of July.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology honored nine members of Congress whose legislative efforts are helping to preserve patient access to quality medical eye care. The Academy presented its 2017 Visionary Awards to Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine; Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa; Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo.; Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.; Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colo.; Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga.; Rep. Doris Matsui, D-Calif.; Rep. Peter Roskam, R-lll.; and Rep. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz.

Studies show there is a gender gap in eye disease. Women are more likely than men to suffer from sight-threatening conditions such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), cataracts, and glaucoma.
