Annual eye exams are an essential part of vision care. These eye exams can help diagnose eye conditions early and reduce further damage to the eye.
A typical eye exam will consist of:
Introductory Interview: During this time, basic questions will be asked regarding medical history and eye health history.
External Examination: The doctor will inspect visible parts of the eye and surrounding tissues.
Pupil Inspection: The doctor will inspect the pupil size, pupil shape, and how they react to light and various objects.
Visual Field: During this, you will probably be asked to cover one eye at a time while the other eye looks straight ahead.
Visual Acuity: This is the test we always see in movies and tv shows! You will be asked to read letters from a chart either projected or hanging on a wall.
Refraction: The doctor will try a variety of lenses to determine corrected vision.
Opthalmoscopy: This test involves a light and magnifying lense that allows the doctor to see a more three-dimensional view of the eye.
Tonometry: This test measures itraocular pressure, which indicates presense or absence of glaucoma.
